THE HISTORY OF THE NIKE AIR JORDAN BRAND:
In 1984, Nike teamed up with basketball player Michael Jordan to launch the Jordan Brand. At that time, the American sporting goods manufacturer was not particularly successful, but had the idea of repositioning itself as a company for athletes. Journalists reported at the time that it wasn't easy for Nike to sign the then-rising NBA rookie. Nike reportedly offered Michael Jordan $500,000/year for a 5-year contract in hopes of building a whole new franchise with him.
To Nike's great regret, Michael Jordan actually wanted to work with adidas back then. But adidas also had problems at the time, as the company was going through a restructuring at the time.
Converse, a brand in which Jordan already played as a player for the University of North Carolina, wanted to sign Jordan, but already had prominent basketball stars under contract in Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Converse pitched Michael Jordan dam as an offer, but he was reportedly unenthusiastic about it and unsure how he would fit into Converse's already well-stocked lineup.
Nonetheless, Jordan made a last-ditch effort at adidas by forwarding Nike's written offer to adidas and asking to come anywhere near the Nike offer. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to work out and Michael Jordan ultimately decided to sign with Nike.
