We weren't on our phones for a moment last night. That's usually okay too. But when we then easily opened Instagram, we got chills down our spines. Virgil Abloh passed away at the age of 41. We've seen that in pretty much every IG story. We are deeply shocked and send our thoughts to Abloh ‘s family.
Not only us, no, the whole (fashion) world is shocked. All great artists, fashion houses, designers and fans mourn. Yes, even those who didn't always relate to Abloh's designs. Because no matter how “controversial” the designer was, he was one of the most influential and successful of our generation. Maybe he was THE most important.
A good two years ago, Virgil Abloh got a pretty bad diagnosis. An angiosarcoma of the heart, a very rare type of cancer. At the time, Virgil decided to keep his illness private. While rumors have been circulating here and there, it's not just because he took some time off and missed his own show, over time his suffering has become apparent. Despite all this, we are incredibly shocked and hit harder than we would have expected. Virgil leaves a hole that no one can quickly fill. And not just in the fashion world, but also in the music industry and in the creative scene in general.
“We are all shocked by this terrible news. Virgil was not only a brilliant designer, a visionary, but also a man with a wonderful soul and great wisdom”, explained LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault. “The LVMH family joins me at this moment of great sadness and we are all thinking of his loved ones after the passing of their husband, father, brother or friend.”
Virgil Abloh has inspired so many people and given them a light at the end of the tunnel. When we look at and sympathize with the expressions of grief from every bubble around the world, we can't help but say that ultra-influential creative undeservedly died far too young. Rest in Peace, Virgil Abloh.
