"With this shoe, our Air design concept has fundamentally changed," says Cushioning Innovation Designer Zachary Elder. The VaporMax is designed to give the wearer the feeling of running on air. To achieve this, the designers first reworked the Air element so that it could be attached directly to the upper material. "That was the biggest challenge," says Senior Footwear Designer Tom Minami. But it was worth it. "As the shoe has neither a midsole nor an insole, it gives a completely new feel to the Air technology." In previous Air Max models, the aim was to equip the sole with as much Air as possible, whereas in the VaporMax they tried to use the Air technology as efficiently as possible. "When the foot touches down, the individual studs are pressed into the Air element, which increases the pressure," explains Elder. "When you push off, the pressure is released. The result is a springy running sensation." After seven years of development from conception to release, Elder and Minami are excited about the future. "I'm very proud of the product," says Elder. "This new approach will be a new turning point for both Air technology and Nike. "The Nike Air Max StoryThe revolutionary Air-Sole element found its way into Nike shoes in 1978. In 1987, the Nike Air Max 1 made its debut - with a visible Air element in the heel. Suddenly, the comfort of Air-Sole was no longer just noticeable, but also visible. Since then, next-generation Nike Air Max shoes have been popular with athletes and collectors alike with their eye-catching color combinations and reliable, lightweight cushioning. The Flyknit StoryNike Flyknit technology was developed based on feedback from runners who demanded a shoe with the perfect, virtually unfelt fit of a sock. Nike conducted development over four years with programmers, engineers and designers to ultimately develop the technology needed to create an upper with static properties for structural strength and durability. The precise placement of support, flexibility and breathability - in a single layer - was then refined. The end result was a featherweight and virtually seamless upper with a perfect fit.
