Every journey begins with a first step. This is also the case with the Asics Gel Kayano Trainer, one of the most renowned and best-known running shoes in the world.The first small step was taken in 1993 in a restaurant on a napkin. A young designer named Toshikazu Kayano was looking for a design for a new model and had no idea at the time that his design would represent a quantum leap for all running enthusiasts and become an icon of the running shoe scene. Based on the further development of the KAYANO TRAINER, GEL KAYANO's were created in the following years, repeatedly setting new standards in the development of running shoes and winning countless awards such as RUNNERS WORLD Magazine's Running Shoe of the Year. In 2014, this extraordinary model celebrates its 20th birthday. "The inspiration for the GEL-KAYANO TRAINER came from the stag beetle," says Kayano. "Despite its sturdy, protective shell, it is agile and fast. Characteristics that runners also expect from a shoe. I wanted my shoe to be as sharp as the stag beetle's claws. That's why their image can also be found in the sole design of the Kayano. "The GEL-KAYANO TRAINER was not designed purely as a running shoe, but should also be able to cope with the demands of cross-training. "A challenge that is not easy to overcome, as it requires cushioning and stability when moving in all directions. A wave-shaped GEL cushioning element, a monsock construction and the use of distinctive, stabilizing elements make it possible. "When asked whether he is not very proud that this ASICS flagship model bears his name, Kayano brushes it off: "That was neither my intention nor my idea. After all, I'm not a famous athlete. But my colleagues from America thought that the name sounded exotic and unique and that was in line with the trend."
