The adidas Stan Smith. Everyone knows the shoe, hardly anyone knows the tennis player behind it. The multiple sneaker of the year has been with us for over 50 years and adidas continues to develop the shoe. Recently, the adidas Stan Smith Crepe has been released, which @christopher just bought. We have a few on-feet pictures for you, but of course we also dive into the story and tell you a little bit about the shoe.

If there's one sneaker that started the all-white sneaker trend, it's the Stan Smith. With its upper made of white smooth leather and the unique perforated 3-Stripes, it goes perfectly with every outfit. Whether you like it or not, when it comes to clean sneakers, the Stan Smith is the mother of all casual white sneakers. Books can be written about its history. But we try to keep it short.

THE STORY OF ADIDAS STAN SMITH

Like every good sneaker story, this one starts with a sport. The Stan Smith was originally developed in 1964 for the tennis court. Namely with the French tennis player Robert Haillet, who created the shoe with adidas. Not only that, he also gave the shoe its name. And the shoe was quickly named the best in tennis because the leather offered more support, preventing twisted ankles and other injuries. In 1971, Haillet retired and adidas was looking for a new tennis player to market the silhouette. The choice fell on Stan Smith. It wasn't until eight years after Smith signed exclusively with adidas that the silhouette was renamed after him. Since then, it is impossible to imagine the streets without it.

THE BREAKTHROUGH

As with all classic sports shoes, the Stan Smith quickly got on the feet of "normal people". The hip-hop world discovered the shoe in the 90's and it was worn and celebrated in films such as La Haine. In December 2019, adidas announced that it had sold its 100 millionth pair of Stan Smiths. According to adidas , the shoe is the best-selling sneaker in the world. However, despite its popularity, adidas ceased production in 2012-2013. Smart move by adidas, as the comeback in 2014 was an absolute success. adidas personalized pairs for Ye and Ellen DeGeneres and Gisele Bundchen posed completely nude in Vogue with a pair of socks and Stan Smith on her feet. Since then, Barneys in New York has also been selling the shoe, not just sneaker stores. And not only that, many designers took the silhouette as a model, including Common Projects.

THE STAN SMITH TODAY

Of course, the silhouette has continued to evolve since the comeback. Stars were allowed to collaborate with the shoe, including Pharrell, Stella McCartney, Raf Simmons and last but not least: Kermit the Frog. And the shape and color was also updated again and again. A while ago the Stan Smith Crepe came along. With a suede upper and a slightly thicker crepe rubber sole. For us one of the best updates. @christopher wears the shoe with light-colored Helmut Lang trousers and a Zara oversized shirt from the current collection. We love the fit, do you? Incidentally, one of adidas' goals is to use only recycled materials in the Stan Smith by 2024. The vegan upper is complemented with a rubber waste sole. Very good thing. So the Stan Smith will remain a clean classic for the future.
